Arundo Donax. Giant Reed.
Arundo Donax, sometimes called Giant Reed is a very tall and architectural cane, but is also graceful and attractive. Bamboo-like hollow stems are upright with lush green foliage. The sword shaped leaves are alternately arranged with tapered tips and gently droop with a hairy tuft at their base. Flowering in late Summer, upright feathery plumes from 40-60cm are produced adding extra interest.
Great for providing both a visual and a sound barrier, growing up to 4m tall the stems can be between 2-3cm in diameter. Hardy in most of the UK, stems will go dormant in Winter but most will stay upright. Leaves can be stripped off the canes at this time to give a tidier appearance if desired. In colder regions mulching would be advisable. In Spring old stems can be cut back to promote new growth.
The Arundo Donax clumps rather than runs and it is relatively shallow rooted so it is easier to control than Bamboo whilst also looking lush and exotic.
