Opuntia Aciculata Cactus. Chenille Prickly Pear. 
The Opuntia Aciculata is a very attractive clustering Cactus forming a dense shrub up to 60-90cm tall and 100-130cm wide. Dull grey-green flattened pads  bear numerous fine golden-yellow to dark red glochids(hair-like prickles) 3-12mm long in dense clusters, also present as a 'fringe' around the edge of the pads. Spines are often absent, but if present there is up to 3 yellowish in colour and between 1-3cm long.

Flowers are produced between 8-10cm across in early summer. A golden yellow colour in habitat but usually bright red-orange in cultivation followed by purplish edible pear shaped fruits.

Very easy to keep, great for growing in pots and needs minimal maintenance. Quite tolerant of winter wet as long as it is planted in a fast draining soil.

    Common Name: Chenille Prickly Pear Cactus. Old Man's Whisker's Cactus. Cowboy's Red Whiskers Cactus. 

    Origin: North Western Mexico. South Western USA.

    Hardiness: Hardy down to -8. Tolerant of drought and neglect.

    Growth Characteristics: Clustering Cactus. Dull grey-green flattened pads. Numerous dense clusters of golden yellow-dark red glochids. 1-3 Spines, if present. Flowers are bright red-orange flowers in summer followed by edible fruit. Will tolerate winter wet if planted in fast draining soil.

    Sun: Full sun/partial shade but will only produce flowers in full sun.

    Exposure: Sheltered.

    Soil: Fast draining soil. Gritty. 

    Moisture: Water around every 10-14 days. Allow to dry between waterings. Keep dry in winter.
