Opuntia Bergeriana. Red Flower Prickly Pear Cactus
The Opuntia Bergeriana is a dense shrubby tree-like variety of cactus. The pads are oblong and paddle shaped, olive green but fading in colour as they mature. Needle-like spines are clustered into groups of 2-8 being between 2-4cm long and bright white when young ageing to grey-brown. Long lasting orange-red flowers appear in April/May followed by egg shaped edible fruit

Very easy to keep, great for growing in pots, needing minimal maintenance. Very attractive and durable.

    Common Name: Red Flower Prickly Pear. 

    Origin: North and South America.

    Hardiness: -4 degrees or lower if kept dry.

    Growth Characteristics: Very easy to grow.  Tree-like shrubby cactus. Olive-green, flat paddle shaped pads. Spines clustered in groups of 2-8. Long lasting orange-red flowers followed by edible fruit. Require little maintenance.

    Sun: Full sun.

    Exposure: Exposed/sheltered.

    Soil: Well drained soil. Gritty.

    Moisture: Water during growing season. Keep dry in winter.

    Feeding: Feed during summer with a balanced liquid cactus fertilizer.
