Pistacia Vera. Pistachio

The Pistacia Vera is a smallish deciduous tree with a spreading growth habit. It has a canopy of pinnate grey-green leaves made up of five oval leaflets. Starting to fruit from around the age of five years, both male and female trees are required for for the fruit to set. It blooms in Springtime when clusters of flowers are produced, a brownish green in colour but lacking any petals. These are followed by oval shaped fruit, which has a hard cream coloured shell turning a more golden colour and splitting apart when the fruit is ripe. This reveals the edible part of the nut, with a mauve coloured skin and light green flesh and that distinctive flavour that is so popular.

Grown in a sunny, sheltered position.
