Psidium Guajava. Common Guava Trees.

The Psidium Guajava, usually known as the Common Guava Tree is a highly branched shrub or a small compact tree with reddish- brown bark which peels easily. The oval shaped leathery leaves are a rich deep green in colour with prominent veins up to 15cm in length. The fruit production begins from around the age of 5 years old with pretty 'frilly' white fragrant flowers, ususlly bourne singly, being produced in late Spring, or in favourable conditions year round. Edible rounded, egg or pear shaped fragrant fruit follow, ripening from green to a yellowish green. The deliciously aromatic and juicy flesh can be pinkish, white or a yellowish in colour packed full of Vitamin C and antioxidants. Seeds are present. Can be eatern raw or  great for making into jams and jellies too.  Self fertile.

    Origin: Central America. Caribbean. Mexico.

    Hardiness: Frost Tender when young.  Can cope with periods of slight cold when mature for short periods, but better kept frost free.

    Growth: Decidous ornamental fruit tree with deep green oval shaped leaves with prominent veins. Compact in size with a smooth reddish trunk when mature. Begins fruiting from the age of 5 years. Fragrant 'frilly' white flowers usually single in late Spring with fruiting between April-June. Roundish, egg or pear shaped fruit with juicy flesh with a delicious flavour. Seeds are present. A natural source of Vitamin. Self fertile.  

    Sun: Full sun/partial shade.

    Exposure: Sheltered.

    Soil: Well drained deep fertile soil rich with organic matter .

    Moisture: Water deeply, then let the surface dry to several inches before watering again.
